7 IN 10 ROMANIANS WANT SOCIAL PROTECTION, EVEN AT THE RISK OF DEFAULTING ON THE COUNTRY’S DEBTS (INFOGRAPHICS)
Romanians send contradictory messages:
They want political stability but also a change in the political class.
They want a state that protects the population, even at the risk of not paying debts, but they support continuing economic reforms, even when they are unpopular.
The data appears in the most recent Informat.ro – INSCOP Research barometer, conducted between May 11-14, 2026.
### Almost unanimous: Romania needs stability
No less than **95.3% of respondents say they totally or somewhat agree with the statement „Romania needs stability, not political conflicts.”** Of these, 87.8% state they „totally agree,” while 7.5% „somewhat agree.”
Only 3.3% are opposed, and 1.3% did not respond.

### Massive demand for changing the political class
The barometer also shows a strong desire for political reset. **68.7% of respondents say they totally agree with the statement „It is time for a complete change of the political class,”** while another 15.8% somewhat agree.
In total, **84.5% of Romanians support the idea of a profound change in the political class.** On the other hand, 12.2% are against, and 3.2% did not offer a response.

### 7 out of 10 Romanians want social protection even at the risk of not paying debts
One of the most sensitive issues in the survey concerns the balance between population protection and the state’s financial discipline.
**46.9% of respondents say they totally agree with the statement „The state must protect the population even at the risk of not being able to pay our debts,”** while another 23.1% somewhat agree.
In total, **70% of those interviewed support this idea.** On the other hand, 25.4% are against, and 4.6% do not know or did not respond.

### AUR voters and rural residents support state intervention the most
According to the barometer data, **support for the idea that the state should protect the population „even at the risk” of not paying debts is higher among AUR voters, individuals with primary education, and rural residents.**
In contrast, opposition to this statement is higher among PNL and USR voters, individuals under 30 years old, individuals with higher education, and residents of Bucharest.
The sociological graph shows significant differences between party electorates: **83% of AUR voters agree with this statement, compared to only 50% of USR voters. For PNL voters, the agreement level is 56%.**

### Two-thirds of Romanians support economic reforms even if unpopular
The survey also indicates strong support for continuing economic reforms.
**45.6% of respondents say they totally agree with the statement „Economic reforms must continue even if they are unpopular,”** while 21% somewhat agree.
In total, **66.6% of those interviewed support continuing the reforms.** Nearly 27% are against, and 6.6% did not respond.

### USR and PNL electorate most strongly support reforms
According to the sociological profile presented in the barometer, **the greatest support for economic reforms comes from USR and PNL voters, individuals with higher education, residents of Bucharest, and public sector employees.**
The data shows that 95% of USR voters support continuing economic reforms even if they are unpopular. In the case of PNL voters, the percentage is 85%, while among AUR voters, the agreement level is 60%.

The Informat.ro – INSCOP Research barometer was conducted between May 11-14, 2026, using the CATI method (telephone interviews), on a sample of 1,100 people. The maximum admitted error is ±3%, with a confidence level of 95%.
